Nelson & Emma
“I
leave Emma, Lady Hamilton, therefore, a legacy to my King and Country,
that they will give her ample provision to maintain her rank in life.”
|
Horatio
Nelson
21 October 1805 |
With
these words inscribed in his journal on the morning of the Battle of Trafalgar,
Nelson asked his King and Country to provide a pension for Emma, Lady
Hamilton and give her the honour he felt she richly deserved.
Sadly, his request
fell on deaf ears, the Establishment having frowned on his relationship
with Emma from the start. Within a short time, she was destitute and heading
for Debtors’ Prison. She eventually fled to France and died in poverty
in Calais in 1815.
Now at last, with
the Bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson’s death, Remember
Nelson Limited has put together a collection of fine art pieces which
not only establish a lasting tribute to Horatio Nelson, but also, for
the first time, honour Emma, Lady Hamilton in the manner which, we feel,
Nelson would have approved.

Emma,
Lady Hamilton
1761 - 1815
The daughter
of a Cheshire blacksmith, the beautiful, young Emma Lyon was never
short of admirers. She finally settled in Naples as wife to the
aged Ambassador, Sir William Hamilton. After his victory at the
Nile in 1798, Nelson visited the city and fell in love with Emma.
Their affair became the talk of Europe. After Nelson’s death
in 1805 a broken-hearted Emma ran into debt and finally fled to
Calais where she died in January 1815. |
